EURAC – European Academy Bozen / Bolzano, Italy
EURAC is an innovative institute for applied research and further education in South Tyrol, Italy, subdivided in five research institutes: Applied Linguistics, Minorities and Autonomies, Sustainable Development, Management and Corporate Culture and Life Science. The institute of Applied Linguistics is involved as partner of the network for multilingualism and linguistic diversity in Europe.
The linguistic, historical and cultural wealth of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-South Tyrol is the starting point for the research conducted by the Institute. The main aim of the research is to offer a targeted contribution to the comprehensive process of political, economic and social integration that was started with the establishment of the European Union.
Thanks to the strong multilingual and multicultural nature of South Tyrol's population, this institute can aspire to offer its scientific contribution to the larger process initiated with the birth of the European Union. The Institute for Specialised Communication and Multilingualism, which shows a continuous scientific growth since its creation, strives at providing solutions for the language situation in South Tyrol and Europe, solutions that are both sustainable and directly applicable.
With the scientific expansion of the Institute recently, also the number of languages it deals with has been increased. Next to the traditional projects on German and Italian, there are studies now on the Ladin language, on other languages of the Alpine arc and on Italian sign language.
The role of EURAC in the network RML2future Coordinator and specialist in the field of research
EURAC is responsible within the network RML2future for the coordination and project management, for valorisation of the results and for the field of research on multilingualism.
For those European regions that have been selected for the first three years of action of the network, EURAC will develop scenarios for language learning and for language transmission in the context of European multilingualism and by using the minority languages. The network offers the opportunity to try and adapt different scenarios, so that people in the regions can directly benefit.
Scenarios will be developed on: • Transmission of the standard language and additionally of the minority- or home language • Transmission of minority languages in preschool and school establishments • Transmission of the minority language to persons belonging to the majority and to immigrants
These scenarios will be brought into use in other multilingual regions in Europe and will consist both of research results as well as of guidelines for practitioners and decision makers.
